BVN exposes people with fake certificates, multiple birth dates

Lagos – An official of one of the leading banks said on Friday that the Bank Verification Number (BVN) policy of the CBN had exposed many Nigerians parading fake certificates and multiple dates of birth.

The official, who spoke anonymously, said in Lagos that some of the challenges encountered in withdrawals by some customers were due to this anomaly.

According to him, some customers who complained of difficulties in accessing their accounts, either had multiple dates of birth on their credentials or are using different names for different accounts.

He particularly mentioned a married woman, who had different dates of birth on her academic qualifications, another on her birth certificate and yet another on her international passport.
“To worsen her case, she cannot remember the dates offhand that she imputed on all the three documents.

“So, it was difficult for the date she supplied to correspond with her name on our BVN platform,’’ he said.

He explained that during the course of resolving a customer’s complaints, he discovered another who used another person’s credentials to gain employment.

The official said that the customer had a different name on his salary account which corresponded to the certificate he was parading and another name for his personal account with the same bank.

“Since the platform had no provision for multiple names for a particular account, it was difficult for the said customer to access his accounts,’’ the official said.

He said that for both cases, the customers were either advised to swear to an affidavit, stating their original name(s) and dates of birth, as applicable.

According to him, the BVN exercise is already responding to the objective for which it was created by the apex bank.

He added that through the BVN, cases mischievous change in dates of birth would be a thing of the past.

The BVN registration inaugurated in February 2014 is an initiative of the CBN and the Bankers Committee to protect depositors’ funds from fraudsters.

We can no longer pay N18,000 minimum wage – GOVs

ABUJA—THE 36 state governors have said that they can no longer pay the N18,000 minimum wage that was signed into law in March 2011 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, owing to the poor state of the economy. Organised labour in its immediate reaction, however, kicked against the governors’ stance, saying workers are ready to shut down the country, if the governors push them into it.

Rising from a crucial meeting that ended at the early hours of yesterday, at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja under the umbrella of Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, the governors said that dwindling prices of oil had drastically affected their states’ income.

FROM LEFT. ZAMFARA STATE GOVERNOR, ABUBAKAR YARI; GOV. ABDULFATAI AHMED OF KWARA STATE AND GOV. IFEANYI OKOWA OF DELTA, AT THE NATIONAL ECONOMIC COUNCIL MEETING IN ABUJA ON THURSDAY

Specifically, they said that the burden of the wage was lighter when oil sold at $126 as against the current $41 per barrel.

They, therefore, sought audience with President Muhammadu Buhari on the economy, resolving that the only way out of the quagmire was to diversify the economy towards agriculture and mining.

Reading the communique issued at the end of the meeting, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari hinted that the Forum also backed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over the N1.4 trillion sanction on MTN.

According to him, the governors agreed that the fine must be paid in full.

He explained that they received briefing from the Acting Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NCC, Professor Umar Dambata who explained the matter to them.

He said: “We resolved that we must look at ways to enhance revenue generation and at the same time look at ways to cut our overhead costs, especially the political office holders’ salaries and other overhead expenses.

“The situation is no longer the same when we were asked to pay N18,000 minimum wage, when oil price was $126 (per barrel) and  we continued paying N18,000 minimum wage when the oil price is $41, while the source of government expenditure is from oil, and we have not seen prospects in the oil industry in the near future.

We can no longer pay — Govs

“We will diversify our economy in the area of agriculture and mining. But at the same time, we should understand our situation where some of us (states) today are taking N100 million as monthly allocation and then have salaries of over N2 billion to pay.

“We, therefore, agreed here to take this suggestion to NEC in our meeting today (yesterday) so that we can find ways to tackle this problem.

“We are also looking at coming together to have discussions with Mr. President and his team, technocrats and experts in the economy to see how we can tackle this problem. We are working harder to deal with it.

“On the sanction by the NCC, the MTN has accepted that they committed the offence and has apologised, and they are appealing for leniency; we the governors forum decided to support the NCC to abide by the laws of the land and the laws of our land do not not give leniency to deliberate offence to our nation.”

Labour rejects governors’ stance…says we will shut down Nigeria, if…

In their reaction, leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, warned that if the governors wanted workers to shut down the nation because of the issue, workers would gladly do so, saying “the governors should not think the Nigerian workers do not have the capacity to retrench them.”

Factional President of NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, while insisting that Nigerian workers totally reject the governors’ position, warned that if the governors wanted organised labour to close down the country, labour was ready to do so. He confirmed that the NLC would be meeting today on the platform of the Central Working Committee, CWC, and the issue would feature prominently after which a statement would be released.

Wabba said: “We reject it totally. Nigerian workers will never accept it. We all know that it is a reality that N18,000 can no longer take the workers home and cannot sustain any family. Many countries are reviewing their minimum wage upwards to meet the current realities. In Nigeria, there is even greater need to increase the minimum wage because our currency had been devalued; inflation keeps rising among others.

“What is the relation of the Nigerian currency to the Dollar or what is value of the N18,000 to the Dollar? We are going to reject the move with all our might. We are not the cause of the problem. They should think out of the box to find solution to the problem. When there was excess crude money, the workers did not benefit and so, we cannot bear the brunt. If the governors want us to close down the country, we will do that.

Lai Mohammed lashes out at NTA, FRCN, NAN over lack of professionalism

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Thursday accused staff of Federal Government-owned media organizations, Nigerian Television Authority,NTA, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, and News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, of throwing professionalism to the wind.

Mohammed observed that the public owned media houses have showed total disregard for editorial independence.

The minister made the observation during his maiden meeting with heads of parastatals under the ministry in Abuja.

He stated that government-owned media organizations always complain of financial woes, forgetting that there is a link between credibility and profitability.

“Advertisers will surely flock to more credible media organizations, and of course, it is also true that content drives advertisement.

“Public broadcasters have mortgaged their credibility on the altar of political correctness, and yet they are endowed with highly-trained and well-qualified personnel, better infrastructure and a wide reach,” Mohammed said.

Governors hail NCC for slamming N1.04trn fine on MTN

The Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, rose from their meeting on Thursday with a resolve to throw their weight behind the Nigerian Communications Commissions, NCC, in the fine it imposed on one of Nigeria’s telecommunication Giants, MTN to pay the $ 5.2 billion, (N1.04) trillion for failing to deactivate unregistered subscribers.

The 36 states governors commended the NCC for its strict enforcement of the law in its regulation of the telecom sector, and encouraged the commission to go ahead with its strict regulatory duties without any fear or favour. They also insisted that that MTN must pay up in full.

Chairman of the Forum, Governor Abdulazeez Yari told newsmen that the governors after receiving a presentation from the NCC chairman, congratulated him on his appointment and assured to collaborate with the commission to assist in boosting the telecommunication industry.

“The Forum also commended the NCC for its strict compliance and enforcement of the law with regards to the fine issued to MTN and advised the Federal Government to ensure prompt and full payment,” he said.

Nigeria loses N4trn to illegal mining – Senate

The Senate on Thursday said the country was losing about N4 trillion to illegal mining activities annually and ordered investigation into the development.

Mandating its Committee on Solid Minerals during plenary to carry out the investigation into the issue, the senate said that the development was worrisome, especially with current low performance of the oil sector.

The Senate also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other law enforcement agencies to live up to their responsibilities, particularly, by arresting and prosecuting illegal miners.

The red chamber urged the executive at the federal, state and the local government levels to take concrete steps to end illegal mining activities.

These resolutions were made sequel to a motion by Sen. Duro Faseyi (PDP Ekiti North), seeking an end to illegal mining in the country.

In the motion, Faseyi drew the attention of the senate to what he described as ‘’worrisome and unlawful plundering’’ of the nation’s solid minerals sector by local and foreign illegal miners.

He claimed that illegal mining had resulted in the loss of over N8 trillion by the nation ‘’every two years’’, lamenting that this had impacted adversely on the already ailing economy.

The lawmaker told his colleagues that illegal mining was thriving in Nigeria because of weak legislations and poor enforcement.
According to him, the situation has jeopardized the urgent need to diversify the economy from oil to solid minerals.

He also said that illegal mining had resulted in the devastation and pollution of the environment, leading to the death of hundreds of Nigerians, with thousands sick or wounded.

Faseyi observed that the government appeared helpless, without any concrete strategy in place to tackle the ‘’monumental economic sabotage’’.

In his contribution, Sen. Lanre Tejuoso (APC Ogun Central) pointed out that the solid minerals sector was not as successful as the petroleum sector in terms of revenue generation.

He blamed the situation on Federal Government’s monopoly on the returns from solid minerals ‘’unlike the liberality enjoyed by the oil sector in terms of control of its revenue.

Tejuoso suggested that the senate should make laws to empower state governments to have jurisdiction to harness solid minerals for more productive exploitation.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said that government would do everything within its powers to tackle the challenges in the mining sector.

Westerhof blasts Oliseh, says he cant take Nigeria to World Cup

Former Nigeria head coach Clemens Westerhof isn’t convinced Sunday Oliseh is the right man to lead the national team to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

Westerhof, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title with the Super Eagles in Tunisia, launched an extraordinary tirade against Oliseh after they beat Swaziland 2-0 on Friday.

Westerhof and Oliseh

Following the victory, Oliseh told the press he was proud of his team, and Westerhof took exception to the idea, saying it was nothing to celebrate.

“Congratulations, you beat Swaziland 2-0 in the return leg match of the preliminary round of the qualifiers,” Westerhof said.

“But does that really call for celebration? Yes, there are no minnows in football but who are Swaziland to hold the Super Eagles to a goalless draw?

“The Super Eagles won 2-0 in Nigeria but is it not a game the Super Eagles should be winning 6-0, 7-0 under normal circumstances? What type of football do they play in Swaziland?

“Swaziland is not the first match Super Eagles have played under Oliseh. There has not been any difference between their first game under him and the game with Swaziland.

“I’m sorry, with Oliseh, the Super Eagles may not go to the World Cup in Russia,” Westerhof declared.

FIFA 2018 WC: No player is guaranteed a shirt, says Oliseh

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh said that no player in his team is guaranteed a place as Nigeria continue in their quest to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Oliseh, was speaking against the backdrop of heart warming performance put up by Sunshine Stars’ Paul Onobi in place of John Obi Mikel in their second leg tie of the qualifiers against Swaziland on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

Oliseh

“What I feel about Onobi is that he’s a home star.

“I said it from the onset that I don’t care of you play at home or abroad.

“If you are good enough and you can adapt to the tactics that we play, we will do it.

“I am glad that the whole world has witnessed a vindication of that policy that I will always adhere to.

“He’s solid. He’s strong on the man (tackle). He’s solid. He’s clairvoyant and one thing I like about him is that he’s very hungry.

“And that’s what we need now.

“However, I must use this medium to state that Onobi did not play at the expense of (Mikel).

“Nobody has a fixed spot in this team,” he said.
