TRAVEL: With Google’s Offline Maps, Getting Around Gets Cheaper

Google’s Offline Maps lets you see turn-by-turn directions, without Wi-Fi or a data connection.

Using your smartphone to look up a museum address or get turn-by-turn directions on a street in a foreign city can end up costing a small fortune in data charges. Those who download Google Maps’s new Offline Maps won’t have to pay a dime.

The tool allows users to be in a place without Internet access — whether on a sidewalk in New York City or a back road in Tuscany — and pull up a map that lets them get directions and use turn-by-turn voice navigation, as well as search for places (art galleries, restaurants, hotels, museums) and see details including hours, phone numbers and reviews.

Offline Maps, introduced this month, is one of a handful of free tools being rolled out by Google as the company further extends its reach in the travel realm. It also recently began promoting a rewards program for people who post online reviews and tips about restaurants, concert halls, botanical gardens, hotels, shops, markets, museums and practically any other place one might want to go, as part of Local Guides.

50 Bodyweight Exercises You Can Do Anywhere - Part 3

21. Chair Squat Pose

Stand with the feet hip-distance apart and squat until the thighs are parallel to the floor while swinging the arms up. Straighten the legs, then lift up the right knee while swinging the left arm outside the right knee. Return to standing and repeat on the other side.

22. Quadruped Leg Lift

Starting on the hands and knees, keep a flat back and engage the core. Raise the left leg straight back, stopping when the foot is hip-level and the thigh parallel to the floor. Balance for as long as possible, then raise the bottom right toe off the floor, tightening the butt, back, and abs (try to be graceful here!). Hold for up to 10 seconds, then switch legs.

23. Step-Up

This may be self-explanatory, but just in case—find a step or bench, and place the right foot on the elevated surface. Step up until the right leg is straight (do it for Channing!), then return to start. Repeat, aiming for 10-12 reps on each side.

Islamic State Radicalizes ‘Thousands’ in United States

Report finds that terrorist group ‘has the necessary supporters in place and the financial means to carry out’ attack in America

Ahmad Musa Jibril (screenshot)

The Islamic State has likely radicalized thousands of people in the United States, according to a new report, raising concerns that supporters of the terrorist group could be plotting domestic attacks similar to the recent shootings and bombings in Paris.

The Threat Knowledge Group, an organization led by the counterterrorism experts Sebastian and Katharine Gorka, has compiled a list of 82 individuals in the United States who were affiliated with the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) and apprehended by law enforcement officials, including those who traveled or attempted to travel to Iraq and Syria, launched domestic attacks, or participated in recruiting or fundraising.

The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise - Part 5

Getting started exercising when you’re anxious or depressed

Many of us find it hard enough to motivate ourselves to exercise at the best of times. When we feel depressed, anxious, stressed or have other mental or emotional problems, it can be doubly difficult. This is especially true of depression and anxiety, and it can leave you feeling trapped in a catch-22 situation. You know exercise will make you feel better, but depression has robbed you of the energy and motivation you need to exercise, or your social anxiety means you can’t bear the thought of being seen at an exercise class or running through the park. So what can you do?

It's okay to start small. In fact, it's smart.

When you’re under the cloud of an emotional disorder and haven’t exercised for a long time, setting yourself extravagant goals like completing a marathon or working out for an hour every morning will only leave you more despondent if you fall short. Better to set yourself achievable goals and build up from there.

APPRECIATING NATURE By Sharon Jane Akinyemi - Part 2

The Importance of Rest and Exercise for Peak Health!

Rest and sleep are natural phenomenon, they are crucial for healing and maintenance of health.  They are also imperative for optimal weight.  Studies have shown that those who sleep less often weigh more!

Rest is defined as a period of inactivity when the systems of the body can restore energy that was expended during activity.  The body cannot expend energy and build-up energy supplies at the same time.  Rest allows the body to redirect energies for cleansing and restoration.  Sleep is defined as a natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli.  Sleep is essential for life and health.

China Again Tests Nuclear Hypersonic Missile

An artistic rendering of a hypersonic aircraft / AP

China carried out a sixth flight test of its new high-speed nuclear attack vehicle on Monday designed to defeat U.S. missile defenses or carry out global strikes.

The ultra-fast maneuvering strike weapon known as the DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle was launched atop a ballistic missile fired from the Wuzhai missile test center in central China’s Shanxi Province, according defense officials.

The vehicle separated from its launcher near the edge of the atmosphere and then glided to an impact range several thousand miles away in western China, said officials familiar with details of the test.

The DF-ZF flight was tracked by U.S. intelligence agencies and flew at speeds beyond Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound.

Obama Critics on France, ISIS: Step It Up, Mr. President

WASHINGTON – As the French uncover more information about the suspected mastermind behind the terror attacks in Paris, President Barack Obama is vowing the United States will offer more of the same in the fight against ISIS.

Prosecutors now know the man believed to be behind the attacks was planning another suicide bombing in the city.

French President François Hollande lobbied President Obama at the White House for the military might only the United States can provide.

"It is about taking out their financing, hunting down their leaders, dismantling their networks, and taking back the land they currently control," Hollande said.

Over 600 join rally urging City of Toronto to ‘stop bullying Christians’

Peter Ruparelia, president of Voices of the Nations, with wife Beena at his right, told the rally-goers that Christians need to fight discrimination together: “We are one. I thank you.”Lianne

An estimated 600 to 700 participants at the “Stop bullying Christians” rally prayed, listened, waved signs, danced and sang hymns in Toronto’s Dundas Square on a cold, overcast Saturday afternoon before marching to City Hall to protest what they say is the city’s blatant discrimination against Christians.

Rally organizer David Lynn urged the crowd, which gathered on one side of Yonge Street to face an Eaton’s Centre teeming with Christmas shoppers, to stand up for their Christian faith whatever the cost.

“Stop being afraid!” said the charismatic street preacher and pastor-founder of the non-denominational Christ’s Forgiveness Ministries. “I am a Christian! You are a Christian! And being a Christian is the greatest thing that you could ever be!”

The surge of Amazon: What makes it so incredible?

Amazon, quite simply, is an American e-commerce company that has erupted onto the global market in recent years, with its share price rocketing and customer base booming. Its founder Jeff Bezos has ensured that his brainchild has continued to be relevant in an ever changing market, and, as of today, Amazon not only survives, but thrives. Although other companies such as Alibaba have seen a rapidly depreciating share price, Amazon makes sure that its profits continue to soar and that it takes up an ever increasing market share, in a market that should be positively brimming with competition and fresh faces. It does this through a simple but ingenious business model, which has ensured itself a steadily growing base of regular users, who are willing to spend disposable income on items sold and marketed by Amazon.

50 Bodyweight Exercises You Can Do Anywhere - Part 1

Who needs a gym when there’s the living room floor? Bodyweight exercises are a simple, effective way to improve balance, flexibility, and strength without machinery or extra equipment. From legs and shoulders to chest and abs, we’ve covered every part of the body that can get stronger with body resistance alone.

Full Body

1. Inchworm

Stand up tall with the legs straight, and do like Lil’ Jon and let those fingertips hit the floor. Keeping the legs straight (but not locked!), slowly lower the torso toward the floor, and then walk the hands forward. Once in a push-up position, start taking tiny steps so the feet meet the hands. Continue bugging out for 4-6 reps.

2. Tuck Jump

Standing with the knees slightly bent, jump up as high as possible (pretend Jeremy Lin is watching!) and bring the knees in toward the chest while extending the arms straight out. Land with the knees slightly bent and quickly jump (on it) again!

Labor Costs to Skyrocket for American Cars

  • Report: UAW contracts will raise labor costs 5 to 20 percent at Big
General Motors Pontiac Metal Center in Pontiac, Michigan / AP

New union contracts negotiated at American auto manufacturers will lead to a spike in labor costs after years of belt tightening.

The United Auto Workers approved significant contract adjustments at Ford and General Motors on Friday after months of tense negotiations. Those decisions—one by membership vote, the other by union leadership—come soon after Fiat Chrysler approved a new deal with dramatic pay boosts. Each of the contracts could reverse “much of the savings achieved by the companies over the last eight years,” according to a study first published in the Wall Street Journal.

The new GM deal would raise labor costs from $55 to $60 an hour, a 9 percent hike, according to a study of the deals from Kristin Dziczek of the Center for Automotive Research and Art Schwartz, a former GM labor executive and president of Labor and Economic Associates. The union contract at Ford also reached the $60 hourly rate over the next four years, a 5 percent increase from its current rate of $57. Those hike pales in comparison with Chrysler, where average hourly wages will spike nearly 20 percent from $47 to $56.

Overcoming mental health obstacles to exercise

So now you know that exercise will help you feel much better and that it doesn’t take as much effort as you might have thought. But taking that first step is still easier said than done. Exercise obstacles are very real—particularly when you’re also struggling with mental health. Here are some common barriers and what you can do to get past them.

  • Feeling exhausted. When you’re tired or stressed, it feels like working out will just make it worse. But the truth is that physical activity is a powerful energizer. Studies show that regular exercise can dramatically reduce fatigue and increase your energy levels. If you are really feeling tired, promise yourself a 5-minute walk. Chances are you’ll be able to go five more minutes.

How technology is helping your health

When I started thinking about what impact technology has had on the world of health, I couldn't begin to fit it all into a single column. Instead, I decided to focus on some of the ones that I personally found most interesting.

Parkinson's disease has gotten a lot more attention lately partly due to the fact that some well known celebrities have it and are raising awareness. Locally, we have Walter Gretzky, dad to the "Great One" of hockey and one of the greatest ambassador's for a sport you will ever meet. Internationally, actor Michael J. Fox is one of the better known celebrities to have it and has done a lot to create awareness and work on a cure through his foundation. It's interesting that both are Canadians and both share a great love of hockey.

When I found out about the Gyenno Spoon for hand tremors, I was both surprised and please. Using a number of smart technologies, this spoon (which also has a fork attachment) uses smart sensors and motors to adjust to unintentional hand tremors (often associated with Parkinson's but can also be caused by various other conditions). I was immediately impressed but also thought it is a great use of technology that will change the lives of the people that use it.

How Obama’s former advisers feel about his strategy against the Islamic State

In the wake of the Islamic State attacks that killed dozens in the streets of Paris and likely took down an airliner over the the Sinai, politicians the world over are under more pressure than ever to confront the terrorist organization.

For President Barrack Obama, the pressure and criticism are nothing new. Recently, however, the critiques haven’t all come from the other side of the aisle. Many in Obama’s own party have questioned his policy, and now some of his former advisers have taken to calling for a stronger approach.

Robert Gates, Former Secretary of Defense:

Gates, who served as Secretary of Defense from 2006-2011, appeared on CBS’s “CBS This Morning” Thursday and called for more aggressive intelligence operations and for Special Operations Forces to embed at lower levels with Kurdish fighters and Sunni tribes. Gates also said airstrikes against the group should be more effective and more precise.

Wearable technology catapulting health and fitness into future

Do you think your smartwatch, with its heart rate monitor, step counter, calorie tracker and message notifications, is impressive? You ain't seen nuthin' yet, according to Dennis Bonilla, executive dean at the college of information systems and technology at the University of Phoenix and a former vice president for Oracle.

"The wearable technologies we're seeing on the market now are early, clunky versions of what's coming soon," Bonilla said. "In the future, your smartwatch will instantly access your medical records, diet and training logs, then sync them with sensors in the supermarket and mall to provide real-time shopping and health advice. Your smart shoes and biometric shirts will remind you to straighten your posture, hydrate and run and walk with correct form to protect your back and knees. A smart bandage will tell diabetics when their blood sugar is running low. Haptic technology will give you intimacy at a distance; when your wife on the phone 1,000 miles away squeezes her Fitbit, your Under Armour will tighten up."

The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise - Part 3

Reaping the mental health benefits of exercise is easier than you think

Wondering just how active you need to be to get a mental health boost? It’s probably not as much as you think. You don’t need to devote hours out your busy day, train at the gym, sweat buckets, or run mile after monotonous mile. You can reap all the physical and mental health benefits of exercise with 30-minutes of moderate exercise five times a week. Two 15-minute or even three 10-minute exercise sessions can also work just as well.

Africa's 50 Richest 2015: South African Tycoons Overtake Nigerians Amid Economic Weakness

After several years of steady growth in Africa, some sectors of the economy hit a wall. Lower prices for oil and other commodities led to a smaller number of African billionaires than a year ago on Forbes new list of Africa’s 50 Richest – 23 billionaires this year, down from 28.

As a group, the continent’s wealthiest 50 are worth $95.6 billion, a decline of $15 billion from a year ago. Aliko Dangote of Nigeria retains his spot as number one richest African for the fifth year in a row, but his $16.7 billion net worth is nearly $5 billion lower than a year ago, a result of a drop in the stock price at his Dangote Cement and a weaker Nigerian currency.

Number two on the list is Nicky Oppenheimer, whose estimated $6.6 billion fortune stems from the stake he inherited in diamond miner and marketer DeBeers. In 2012, Oppenheimer sold the DeBeers stake to mining giant Anglo American for $5.1 billion in cash. He moves up the ranks from the number three spot in 2014.

Obama Sees Worst Rating on Handling of Terrorism in His Career

In the wake of the Paris terror attacks, President Obama has earned his worst rating on his handling of terrorism in his career.

Currently, 54 percent of U.S. adults disapprove of the way in which Obama is handling terrorism threats, the worst such rating in his White House career, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Friday. Forty-three percent of Americans disapprove strongly of the president’s handling of terror threats.

Americans are particularly critical of Obama’s response to the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIL or ISIS), the terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in Paris and that has also threatened attacks on the United States. Fifty-seven percent of U.S. adults disapprove of Obama’s handling of IS, with 46 percent doing so strongly.

Only Five Syrian Christians Admitted to U.S. Since October

  • Christians make up 10 percent of Syrian population, 1.6 percent of refugees

Serbian police check identification documents of the refugees on the border line between Macedonia and Serbia / AP
Only five Syrian Christians have been admitted to the United States since October, accounting for fewer than two percent of all refugees accepted.

The Worldwide Refugee Admissions Processing Systems (WRAPS), which tracks refugee resettlement, reports that three Syrian Catholics, one Christian, and one Orthodox believer have arrived in the United States since the 2016 fiscal year began in October. This accounts for just 1.6 percent of all refugees accepted, far below the 10 percent of the population Syrian Christians comprise.

President Barack Obama plans to admit 10,000 of the 4.3 million Syrian refugees who have fled the country, mostly to Europe, since the civil war began in 2011.
Following the Islamic State attacks in Paris that left 129 dead, Obama painted opponents who have called for restraint in admitting and settling the refugees in the United States as extremists. He directed harsh criticism at those, including Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), who would prioritize Syrian Christians in asylum process as “shameful.”

Saudi Arabia, an ISIS That Has Made It

Black Daesh, white Daesh. The former slits throats, kills, stones, cuts off hands, destroys humanity’s common heritage and despises archaeology, women and non-Muslims. The latter is better dressed and neater but does the same things. The Islamic State; Saudi Arabia. In its struggle against terrorism, the West wages war on one, but shakes hands with the other. This is a mechanism of denial, and denial has a price: preserving the famous strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia at the risk of forgetting that the kingdom also relies on an alliance with a religious clergy that produces, legitimizes, spreads, preaches and defends Wahhabism, the ultra-puritanical form of Islam that Daesh feeds on.

Wahhabism, a messianic radicalism that arose in the 18th century, hopes to restore a fantasized caliphate centered on a desert, a sacred book, and two holy sites, Mecca and Medina. Born in massacre and blood, it manifests itself in a surreal relationship with women, a prohibition against non-Muslims treading on sacred territory, and ferocious religious laws. That translates into an obsessive hatred of imagery and representation and therefore art, but also of the body, nakedness and freedom. Saudi Arabia is a Daesh that has made it.

Technology speeds holiday shopping, but Black Friday still motivates November 22, 2015 12:00 AM

Darrell Sapp/Post-GazetteErin Rayle of Oakdale waits with a shopping cart for her and her family party of five at the Mall at Robinson during last year's Black Friday.

It’s Christmas Eve, and the little ones — who are supposed to be asleep — have their noses pressed to their frosty bedroom windows, searching the cloudy sky for the presents being delivered by ... drones.

“Physically, they are perfectly feasible,” said Willem-Jan Van Hoeve, an associate professor in the Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business. “But a big hurdle for drones is the legal status. Do we allow drones to go from Point A to Point B without a physical person having them in sight? The technology is almost there or even already there. It’s just a matter of legalization.”

A great many people are nervous about the idea of unmanned aerial vehicles flying low over them.

“Amazon and others are developing these delivery drones. They’ve made great leaps in this technology,” Mr. Van Hoeve said. “But I would not want them to deploy them on a massive scale. From a delivery standpoint, they can be a great tool, but you have to be very careful. You have to think about accidents that may happen.

US Resettlement Policy Discriminates Against Syrian Christian Refugees, Favors Muslims

Due to reliance on the United Nations, the United States' Syrian refugee resettlement program unintentionally discriminates against Christians fleeing from the Islamic State, as Christians comprise less than three percent of the nearly 2,200 Syrian refugees resettled in the United States since the beginning of the Syrian conflict.

CNS News reports that State Department statistics compiled from the start of the Syrian civil war in the spring of 2011 until now, show that 96 percent of the approximately 2,184 Syrian refugees that have resettled inside the United States have been Muslim, with over 2,057 of the resettled refugees being Sunni Muslims.

While President Barack Obama has chastised Republican candidates for suggesting that the U.S. should focus more on granting asylum to Syrian Christian refugees, the U.S. has taken in only 53 Syrian Christians (four Catholic, five Orthodox and 44 other Christians) since the start of the civil war.

Although the CIA World Factbook states that Syria's population before the civil war consisted of 10 percent Christians and 90 percent Muslims, Christians make up just 2.4 percent of the U.S. Syrian refugee resettlement program in the U.S. Other Syrians who have resettled in the U.S. include one Yazidi, two Baha'i, six Zoroastrians, six of "other religion," seven of "no religion," eight Jehovah's Witnesses, and three atheists.
