Golden Eaglet maul Australia 6 nil
Coach Emmanuel Amuneke must be proud of
his boys as they recovered from the surprising 1-2 loss to Croatia at the last
match of the group stage to record an emphatic victory over Australia. The
Nigeria U-17 National Team was in imperious form early hours of today as they
walloped their Australian counterpart by 6 goals to nothing.
The opening stage of the match was a cagey affair until the 22nd minutes when the Eagles broke
loose with a well taken goal by the tournament leading scorer Victor Osimhen,
when he cut in the Australian defence, turning his defender and slotted the
ball past the goal keeper.
Funsho Bamgboye had earlier hit the post with a
terrific shot from the edge of the penalty area as Nigeria’s first effort
narrowly failed to break the deadlock.
The second goal was a spot kick in the 25th minutes after Bangboye
was fouled in the penalty area and Captain Kelechi Nwakali made no mistake by
sending the goalkeeper the wrong way from the resultant penalty.
The Second half resumed with the Eaglets
dominating the pace of the game and were rightly rewarded with the third goal
by Osimhen after a defence mishap by the Aussies in the 73rd minute. The
Australian defence caved in 6 minutes after for the fourth goal. The goal was
pure beauty as Osimhen's curving lob found its way into the net to complete his
hat trick for the night.
The
hapless Australian conceded the fifth goal with a beautiful header by substitute, Edidiong
Michael Essien which sailed into the net in the 86th minute. Samuel Chukwueze
completed the rout in the 88th minute with the sixth goal of the night as
Nigeria stormed into the last-eight in triumphant fashion.
Victor Osimhen, a
reminder of Samuel Eto in frame and lethal finishing skills rightly deserved to
be tagged the star of the night and presently the leading scorer in the
competition with 7 goals.
The Eaglets are scheduled to meet Brazil in
quarter finals on Sunday. Brazil defeated New Zealand by a lone goal to set up a mouthwatering clash with
Nigeria.

VANGUARD
Buhari to Indians: I'll not tolerate importation of sub-standard drugs, foods.
New Delhi-President Mohammadu in New Delhi
warned Indians against shipping fake and sub-standard foods and medicines to
Nigeria, saying his government would not tolerate such act.
The president gave the warning in an
interactive session with Chief Executives of Indian companies with interests in
Nigeria.
He also assured that Nigeria’s economy was
doing well despite the fall in oil prices, expressing hope that with its
abundance of human and material resources, the Nigerian economy does not have
to suffer unduly from low oil prices, despite its severe impact on government
revenues.
