MTN gets Dec 31 deadline to pay N674bn slashed fine

LAGOS— FINALLY, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has reduced the N1.04 trillion fine it imposed on MTN Nigeria to N674 billion.

However, the commission has also mandated the telecom operator to pay the fine on or before December 31, 2015.

The fine imposed on the telecom operator was due to what NCC described as MTN’s inability to disconnect about 5.1 million Nigerian subscribers improperly registered on its network, after several warnings in August and September 2015.

In reaction, MTN has said it would carefully study the new development and would mandate its Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko, to immediately and urgently re-engage with the Nigerian authorities before responding formally.

Ghana's fight against corruption has been dealt another setback after the country was ranked as the second most corrupt African nation behind South Africa.

The corruption perception index by the Transparency International stated about 71 percent of people living in Ghana say corruption has increased over the last twelve months.

Most governments across Africa are also seen as failing in their duty to stop the abuse of power, bribery and secret deals, according to the new opinion poll.

In the report People and Corruption: Africa Survey 2015, part of the Global Corruption Barometer, Transparency International partnered with Afrobarometer, which spoke to 43,143 respondents across 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa between March 2014 and September 2015 to ask them about their experiences and perceptions of corruption in their country.

NSA, Microsoft team up to tackle cybercrime in Nigeria

Worried with the increasing cybercrime that cause more economic harm than good in Nigeria, platforms and productivity services giant, Microsoft Nigeria has joined forces with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and other industry stakeholders, to tackle the ugly trend.

Cyber crime
With over N159 billion lost by Nigerians through online scam and identity theft between 2000 and 2013 as well as 2,175 websites defaced within the same period, in a cybersecurity capacity building workshop organised last week in Abuja between Microsoft and NSA, participants agreed that there was need for education and awareness intervention for security and law enforcement and other ICT regulatory agencies in Nigeria for enhancing the security of the country’s cyberspace so as to checkmate cybercrime promptly.

Kirk Franklin Responds to Rapper Plies Inviting Him to Strip Club

Kirk Franklin may be willing to lose his religion for the sake of bettering his relationship with God, but he is not willing to compromise his Christian faith for a rapper who invited the music minister to a strip club.
Plies, a popular Florida rapper, proposed to Franklin to attend a Miami, Florida, strip club called King of Diamonds in exchange for the rapper attending church.

TRAVEL: With Google’s Offline Maps, Getting Around Gets Cheaper

Google’s Offline Maps lets you see turn-by-turn directions, without Wi-Fi or a data connection.

Using your smartphone to look up a museum address or get turn-by-turn directions on a street in a foreign city can end up costing a small fortune in data charges. Those who download Google Maps’s new Offline Maps won’t have to pay a dime.

The tool allows users to be in a place without Internet access — whether on a sidewalk in New York City or a back road in Tuscany — and pull up a map that lets them get directions and use turn-by-turn voice navigation, as well as search for places (art galleries, restaurants, hotels, museums) and see details including hours, phone numbers and reviews.

Offline Maps, introduced this month, is one of a handful of free tools being rolled out by Google as the company further extends its reach in the travel realm. It also recently began promoting a rewards program for people who post online reviews and tips about restaurants, concert halls, botanical gardens, hotels, shops, markets, museums and practically any other place one might want to go, as part of Local Guides.

50 Bodyweight Exercises You Can Do Anywhere - Part 3

21. Chair Squat Pose

Stand with the feet hip-distance apart and squat until the thighs are parallel to the floor while swinging the arms up. Straighten the legs, then lift up the right knee while swinging the left arm outside the right knee. Return to standing and repeat on the other side.

22. Quadruped Leg Lift

Starting on the hands and knees, keep a flat back and engage the core. Raise the left leg straight back, stopping when the foot is hip-level and the thigh parallel to the floor. Balance for as long as possible, then raise the bottom right toe off the floor, tightening the butt, back, and abs (try to be graceful here!). Hold for up to 10 seconds, then switch legs.

23. Step-Up

This may be self-explanatory, but just in case—find a step or bench, and place the right foot on the elevated surface. Step up until the right leg is straight (do it for Channing!), then return to start. Repeat, aiming for 10-12 reps on each side.

Islamic State Radicalizes ‘Thousands’ in United States

Report finds that terrorist group ‘has the necessary supporters in place and the financial means to carry out’ attack in America

Ahmad Musa Jibril (screenshot)

The Islamic State has likely radicalized thousands of people in the United States, according to a new report, raising concerns that supporters of the terrorist group could be plotting domestic attacks similar to the recent shootings and bombings in Paris.

The Threat Knowledge Group, an organization led by the counterterrorism experts Sebastian and Katharine Gorka, has compiled a list of 82 individuals in the United States who were affiliated with the Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) and apprehended by law enforcement officials, including those who traveled or attempted to travel to Iraq and Syria, launched domestic attacks, or participated in recruiting or fundraising.

The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise - Part 5

Getting started exercising when you’re anxious or depressed

Many of us find it hard enough to motivate ourselves to exercise at the best of times. When we feel depressed, anxious, stressed or have other mental or emotional problems, it can be doubly difficult. This is especially true of depression and anxiety, and it can leave you feeling trapped in a catch-22 situation. You know exercise will make you feel better, but depression has robbed you of the energy and motivation you need to exercise, or your social anxiety means you can’t bear the thought of being seen at an exercise class or running through the park. So what can you do?

It's okay to start small. In fact, it's smart.

When you’re under the cloud of an emotional disorder and haven’t exercised for a long time, setting yourself extravagant goals like completing a marathon or working out for an hour every morning will only leave you more despondent if you fall short. Better to set yourself achievable goals and build up from there.
